In Gold and Silver, the only way to obtain an evolution stone was to receive one from the Old Man on Route 25. In Crystal, this changes.

If you speak with certain trainers, they will find evolutionary stones or be given them by other trainers. They will then call you and you must go receive the item from them. This is especially useful if you want to evolve Eevee into Vaporeon or Growlithe into Arcanine before you face the Elite Four.

You aren't always to get the item any time soon. You may receive it late in the Johto region, or shortly after obtaining that person's phone number. Below is a list of people who will give you the stone, where, and what stone they give you.

On Route 34, Picnicker Gina will give you the Leaf Stone if you obtain her phone number.

On Route 36, Schoolboy Alan will give you the Leaf Stone if you obtain his phone number.

On Route 38, lass Dana will give you the Thunder Stone if you obtain her phone number.

On Route 42, Fisher Tully will give you the Water Stone if you obtain his phone number.
