Unlike the Third Generation where you couldn't trade with the First or Second Generations, the Fourth Generation has some trading ability with the previous generations. These feature, known as migrating, is only unlocked after you have defeated the Elite Four and obtained the National Dex.

After speaking with Professor Rowan and obtaining the National Dex, Professor Oak will appear and allow you into a place called Pal Park at the end of Route 223. Go there and speak with him, and he will allow you to use the facility.

Now that you have Pal Park unlocked, you can migrate Pokemon from your game. Insert Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen into the GBA slot of your DS along with Diamond or Pearl. Turn the game on, and a new section will be on the start menu called "Migrate from ".

If you choose "Migrate from ," you should know several things:
1. Pokemon you migrate can never be returned to the GBA game.
2. You can only migrate once per 24 hours per game cartridge. Meaning, you can only migrate once a day from the same FireRed game, but you may migrate from LeafGreen or Ruby if you had them.
3. Pokemon that are to be migrated cannot hold mail or know HM moves.
4. Only six Pokemon may be migrated at once. Those Pokemon must be caught before you can migrate again. 5. The Pokemon you wish to migrate must be in your PC. They will not show up if they are in your party or in a daycare.

So if you meet the requirements, you can migrate any six Pokemon. Head to Pal Park and speak to the man inside and he should let you in with six special Pokeballs. These balls are yellow masterballs. You will use these to capture the Pokemon; don't worry, your Pokemon retain all their moves, stats and abilities. They even retain the ball they were originally caught with!

Inside the Pal Park are five areas; the mountain area, the plains area, the forest area, the ocean area, and the pond area. Depending on where the Pokemon is found in the GBA game, it will appear in a certain area. You'll need surf to find any Pokemon that is the Water-type.

Most Pokemon can be found by searching each area thoroughly. Legendary Pokemon are rarer and will take some time to find them. It may be helpful to write down the names of the six Pokemon you migrate so you know if you've seen them all.
