Shaymin is one of the four Pokemon in Diamond and Pearl that can only be obtained through an event. It's role in the Pokemon universe is much like Suicune, bringing flowers and life to polluted and barren land. As of 2-11-08, there is no event that gives away the Oak's Letter item, which is needed to obtain Shaymin. In order to get the Oak's Letter, you will have to get it at an event that gives it away. Pick the item up at the Pokemart and head for Route 225.
At the very end of the route you will come across Professor Oak standing next to a silver rock. He explains that a similar rock has appeared in Kanto, and wants you to engrave the name of the person who inspired you to come this far. Once you do, the screen will flash and the area will be covered in flowers. Shaymin will appear from a newly opened area and run back once it's been noticed.
You will have to follow it down the Seabreak Path. This path is incredibly long, so I suggest you set you bike to the highest gear and ride. At the end is an island called Flower Paradise, with Shaymin sitting in a field of flowers. Talk to it and it will engage battle. It is at level 30, and is the Grass-type, knowing the moves Defense Curl, Magical Leaf, Leech Seed, and Synthesis. So a Pokemon (or several) of equal or lower level will be needed to fight this Pokemon. This Pokemon should know a Fire move and have a resistance to grass moves. If at all possible, use Heal Block to prevent Shaymin from restoring HP. Attack it until it's health is in the red zone, then proceed to paralyze it or induce sleep. Throw ultra balls until it is caught. If it wakes up, put it to sleep again.
