The legendary dogs/beasts/cats/whatever will appear in Johto once they have been awakened from the Burnt Tower located in Eruteck City. You'll need Rock Smash to get to where they are. In the middle of the main floor is a hole. If you drop down through it, you'll find yourself with the sleeping beasts.

Once they've awakened and run out, you can now find them running around in the grassy areas of Johto. They don't go in caves or on water, or in Kanto, so that narrows down where you can find them.

While walking around training Pokemon, finding new areas, or catching Pokemon, you may run into one of them. You'll probably be caught off-guard when they appear and be so over joyed when you find one. (I know I was when I first ran into Suicune.) They'll run (unless you use the Masterball) and you will be able to track them with your Pokedex.

Whenever you enter a new route or town, the dog will change location. This can be clear across Johto or they will enter your route when they move. Usually if you're in a town and one of them is in two routes over, it's more than likely that they will move into the same route with you. You might have to fly around a couple times before this may happen.

Once you've seen them, you'll want to obtain the following things:
- Master Ball or 60 Ultra Balls
- A Haunter or Gengar Level 45+ that knows "Mean Look" and "Hypnosis"
- 10 Max Repel
- A lot of time

So now that you've gotten your beast in the same route as you, put the Pokemon that knows Mean Look up front. Then use a Max Repel so that you won't find any Pokemon but them. Walk around until you find them. Mean Look should be your first move, and then Hypnosis. At this point most people recommend switiching to Scyther/Scizor and use False Swipe. This can be done, but if your Haunter/Gengar knows a weak but yet effective move, use it until the beast is low on health. This is where you hurl Ultra Balls until it wakes up (where you then stop and use Hypnosis again) or when you catch it.

However, if you have a Master Ball, using it will have you skip all this for one of them. If you have more than one Master Ball, you can skip it for all of them. This what you save the Master Ball for.

I tend to find one of them almost always on Route 38 or Route 46 directly after freeing them. I'm not sure if this is just pure luck or how it is set.
