Pokemon Gold & Silver were the next installment to the Pokemon
world, boasting over 100 new Pokemon and many new features. In many
player's eyes, this game is the pinnacle of the Pokemon series. New Features One of the most notable and noticable features is the day and night system. You get to set the in-game clock and date to whatever time you like, and the game will cycle between day and night depending on what the in-game clock is at. Many Pokemon can be found in the day, while others only come out at night. The same goes for a couple trainers; some will only battle you at night, or on a certain day. The same is true of Pokemon; some will only appear on a certain day of the week. Another new feature to the Pokemon world is Poke-Genders, baby Pokemon, and breeding. All Pokemon, exclude for a special few, have genders. Some Pokemon appear more as a male Pokemon, while others appear as female more often. Some are only female, and some are only male. What does this all mean? Breeding. You can place two compatible Pokemon a daycare center and those two will produce an egg. This allows you to obtain multiple starters or new baby Pokemon; baby forms of older or newer Pokemon. One more feature is that Pokemon can hold items that are natural, or not man-made. Berries, cookies, scarves, etc can all be held by Pokemon and will have a certain effect on them in battle or when traded. Some might heal themselves, raise a stat, or cause them to evolve. Unfortuanately, Pokemon are unable to use man-made items like Potion or Antidote. Two new types: Steel and Dark. This throws in a new was to battle in the mix, creating new weaknesses and resistances. The Poke-Gear makes its debut here, and has several features. It functions as a map of Johto or Kanto, a radio, and a clock. The radio can display valuable information like Oak's Talk show or play a certain tune to draw Pokemon out into the area. And the clock? Well, it just displays the time. Features = 10/10 251 Pokemon! Nintendo added 100 new Pokemon to the game! Many are all new creations, while others are pre-evolutions or newer evolutions that could not be obtained because a new feature was absent in Red and Blue. These Pokemon comes with new types combos, attacks, and movesets. The new Pokemon additions allow for more intense battles, weakness, resistances, and team combos that will forever alter the battle scene. New Pokemon = 10/10 Challenge Gold & Silver comes with a newer version of an older challenge. Capturing 251 Pokemon who are scattered throughout the two lands and time. You'll have to battle, train, attend events, evolve, and trade to obtain all 251 creatures. This is the bulk of the game, and because older Pokemon are absent from the game, you'll have to do some friend making to get them. Which can be good or bad for you, as you might have to give up a Pokemon you'd like to keep. The Elite 4 returns, but they appear to be weaker than the previous Elite 4. Wrong! Will's team of Psychics could decimate a party of 70's. And if that isn't hard enough, you can travel to Kanto to collect another 8 badges with stronger trainers and gym leaders. Not to mention Kanto throws in some new sidequests to complete. And the Battle Tower? This is the most insane battling you will ever do. Many of the Pokemon battled here have more stats and alot of strong moves that will send the toughest Charizard crying. Getting through one round will have you frustrated and screaming in rage as a Miltank takes down your mightest Pokemon. Challenge = 9/10 Story The story is much like the one used in Red & Blue. You must train your team of Pokemon to defeat the Gym Leaders and the Elite 4 while saving the world from an evil organization. However, after you do this, you must do it again in a whole new (while still older) land! Good thing is that the trainers in the new land are stronger and new Pokemon await you. Many new faces appear in the game, along with a hand full of old faces. Story = 9/10 Music Gold & Silver features all new music which for a Gameboy game still sound great today. The battle themes are fast paced when they need to be, like a gym leader battle, or slow and dark like the Champion battle. All the older Kanto towns, caves, forests, and routes receive a new theme for them. Some of themes are vibrant and really fit the area depending if its day or night, and the mood your in. Other themes can give the area a mysterious or adventurous feel to it when your exploring a cave or crawling around in a forest. Some of music is newer versions to older ones, like surfing, which aren't up to par as the Red & Blue version. These remix themes seem happier and lighter, when their older counterparts were slower and deeper sounding. Music = 9/10 Graphics Gold and Silver is in color. Which only means one thing: newer graphics! All overworld sprites and battle sprites are redone for the new game. Many older Pokemon are given newer sprites that look better than the newer and older sprites we have today, although some aren't, like Jynx or Articuno which look just horrible. Buildings, trees, grass, water, rocks, and people are recolored and revamped. Some sprites are merely colored that did not get revamped, like the ground in caves or in a route. Doesn't seem like it, however. Graphics = 9/10 Verdict 9/10 = A Gold and Silver brought many new Pokemon, features, and items that would carry over into newer games and a new generation of trainers. Which only means that Gold & Silver did something right. Many players still play the game today, and newer players are finding them game learning where all the cool features we have today came from. |
