The Elite Four of the original games is quite easily the toughest out of all three generations due to their high levels and the massive damage they can inflicit. However, they can be a bit stupid at times when using their next move (Like using Dream Eater without putting you to sleep the turn prior.)

There are several things you will want to have when going to face them if you want a chance at winning:

  • 60-99 Full Restores
  • 40-60 Revives
  • Level 50-70 Pokemon, 40-50 if you really want a challenge

Now you do not need that many items, so get around that number just to be safe. The more you have the more likely you are to succeed. However, the more you play the game, the less items you'll need when facing the heavenly four.

Cold Mistress Lorelei
Dewgong Lv. 54

Cloyster Lv. 53

» Spike Cannon
Slowbro Lv. 54

» Growl

» Amnesia
Jynx Lv. 56

» Ice Punch
» Body Slam
» Doubleslap
» Thrash
Lapras Lv. 56

» Body Slam
» Confuse Ray
» Ice Beam
» Blizzard

Lorelei specializes in the Ice department, and which is bad business if your frozen.

Dewgong and Lapras should be the only Pokemon to give you trouble. Dewgong will use Rest and restores its HP, but will sleep for two turns, so take it out then with Thunderbolt or an equally powerful move. Lapras knows many strong attacks, so similar strategy with Dewgong should be used.

Jynx is a moderate threat; it is slow but has some good attacks. A powerful move like Mega Punch or Flamethrower should easily take it out, however.

Cloyster and Slowbro aren't threats and simple Thunderbolt will take them out.

Fighting Master Bruno

Onix Lv. 56

Machamp Lv. 56

» Leer
» Focus Energy
» Fissure
» Submission

Bruno's Pokemon really aren't that much of a threat and are incredibly easy to defeat. Both of his Onix's have absolutely no hope of winning, so a powerful Water or Grass move like Surf or Razor Leaf make quick work of them.

Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee are the only Pokemon he has that have a hope of doing anything productive because they all have been taught powerful moves. They have low defenses, however, so they can be taken out with a hit or two. They stand no chance against the move Psychic.

Watch out for Machamp. It can be a threat with Fissure, but other than that there is not much to worry about. Simply attack it for awhile and it'll go down; like with the Pokemon before, a Psychic move is deadly to it.

Nightmare Queen Agatha

Gengar Lv. 56

» Toxic
» Night Shade
» confuse Ray
» Dream Eater

Now things get hard here. You will be confused, put to sleep, and poison out the wazoo so many times your head will spin.

Her first Gengar and Haunter aren't much of a threat until they use Hypnosis on you, which they'll follow up with Dream Eater. If you get confused, switch. Don't bother. They're weak to Groud moves like Earthquake, or Psychic. Her other Gengar is weak to the same, but it will try to badly poison you so act quickly. Unlike her other Gengar, it isn't a threat if you aren't asleep.

Golbat is the annoyer, and it will always try to confuse you. Take it out quickly with Psychic or Thunderbolt. Arboc is just fun to play with; knock it out with an Earthquake before it paralyses you.

Dragon Tamer Lance

Aerodactyl Lv. 60

» Hyper Beam
» Supersonic
» Bite
» Take Down
Dragonite Lv. 62

» Agility
» Slam
» Barrier
» Hyper Beam

Lance's Pokemon can either be easy to beat or insanely hard. Gyarados and Aerodactyl have a great weakness to Electric, so Thunderbolt comes in handy.

Dragonair aren't really a threat in this case, but are deadly if their Hyper Beam hits. They are greatly weak to Ice Beam. The same is with Dragonite; just watch out for it's Hyper Beam as it is stronger than its preevolved form.

Your rival is the champion of the Pokemon League. His team varies depending on what your starter was. If your starter was Squirtle, you'll want to look at the Bruteroot table. If it was Bulbasaur, look at the Lizardon table. If you chose Charmander, see the Shellshocker table.

Pidgeot, like any other flying type, is grealty weak to Electric, so Thunderbolt will make quick work of it. Take it out quickly as it knows some very powerful moves. Rhydon is an absolute joke so just use Water or Grass moves on it. Alakazam is a very deadly Pokemon. You'll want to attack with some very powerful moves such as Body Slam, Mega Punch, or Earthquake. If you wait to long, your entire team can be decimated.

As seen earlier with Lance, Gyarados is grealt weak to Thunderbolt. Arcanine is a joke; Earthquake or Surf will murder it. Exeggutor, like Rhydon, isn't much of a threat. Poison or Fire moves will knock it out.

Venusaur is no match for a Fire-type Pokemon, so use Fire-type moves to take it out. Alternatively, Psychic moves will work too. Charizard is a Fire/Flying type, so Water, Rock, and Electric moves will work wonders on it. Blastoise knows Blizzard, which is powerful, so watch out. Use Electric and Grass moves to exploit its weakness.
