After selecting "New Game", Professor Oak will appear and explain the
basic plot of the game to you. Then you'll be able to name your player
from 3 pre-selected ones or can make up your own. Once you choose your
name, he'll introduce your rival and the same naming thing occurs. Once
done with that, you'll start the game and end up in your room, which is
very dull for a 10 yrs old's room. Over in the corner is a PC, access
it by press "A" when your in front of it. Go to withdrawl and select
potion. Leave the PC and head for ths stairs opposite of the PC.
Not much down here, your mom says nothing important. Leave the house.
Entrances are marked by a rug/carpet icon. Once outside, head north and
try to leave town. Professor Oak will appear and take you to his lab.
Once there, you will be able to choose one out of three Pokemon.
Bulbasaur, a Leaf/Poison Pokemon. Charmander, a Fire Pokemon. Finally,
Squirtle, a Water Pokemon. Which ever one you choose, your rival will
choose the one that has a type advantage over you. You pick Charmander,
he picks Squirtle. You pick Squirtle, he choose Bulbasaur. You choose
Bulbasaur, he chooses Charmander.

Before you are able to leave the lab, your rival will challenge you to
a battle. Just attack like crazy and use the potion (select items to
use it) when your health is between 0 and 7. Since neither of you have
elemental based moves, this shouldn't be to hard for you. If you do
lose, doesn't matter now. Leave and continue north.

Pokemon: Pidgey, Rattata
The road to Viridian City contains wild Pidgey and Rattata leveld
anywhere from 2-5, so its a good place to level up early in the game.
If you chose Bulbasaur, I suggest you avoid Pidgey since Leaf is weak
against the move "Gust". Right now, you cannot catch any of them. You'll pass a boy walking around on your way north. Talk to him and he gives you a free potion. Keep going and you'll find yourself in the next city. ![]()
Once here, find the Poke-Center (sign says Poke) and heal your Pokemon by talking to the lady behind the counter. Leave here and find the Poke-Mart (sign shoulder say mart). It appears the mailman forgot to deliver Oak's mail so you will have to take it back to him. Just take Route 1 back to Pallet.
Head to Oak's lab and hand him the mail. Your rival will appear and then Oak will give you Pokedex's, items thjat record data on Pokemon you see and catch. Leave and head for your rival house. Inside, talk to his sister and she will hand you a town map which can be used to see where you are at. There is not much else to do, so return to Viridian.
Head for the mart. You can now buy items like Pokeball and Potion.
You have little over $3000, so you may want to buy half & half on
Potions and Pokeballs. If you need to heal, head for the center. North of town is an old man. If your a novice player, talk to him to learn how to catch Pokemon. When your done, head west of town towards Route 22.
Pokemon: Nidoran M (Red Version), Nidoran F (blue version), Rattata, Spearow If you chose Charmander, I suggest catching a Nidoran. They
learn a fighting type move that will help later on. Catch one
regardless anyways. If you continue on, you'll face your rival again.
This time he added a Pidgey to his arsenal. If you attack nonstop, his
Pidgey will go down easy. His stater now knows a move of its type, so
it may give you trouble. Heal when needed and attack nonstop. There is
wild Spearow beyond you rival. They can be useful later on. Return to
town, heal @ the center and head north.
Pokemon: Rattata, Pidgey, Caterpie, Metapod, Weedle, Kakuna, Pikachu
Not much here so continue to Viridian Forest.
Pokemon here are weak against the move Peak/Gust. Use Spearow or Pidgey
against the Pokemon here to gain EXP faster. Scattered around are
several items and trainers. The flying type moves take good care of the
Trainer's Pokemon. Keep going through the maze until you find your way
out. Stay a little longer to catch Pikachu, a powerful electric mouse
that will be good to have a little bit later. He is a bit rare to find,
so keep looking. Find your way out when your done
![]() A little ways north is a patch of grass. Use Pikachu to battle the Pidgey's until he is around level 8-10. Run to Pewter City if you need to heal.
Head for the Poke-Center and heal. Then, find the Poke-Mart and buy Poke-balls and Potions if needed. Look for the building with the word "GYM" on it. That is a gym. Inside is a trainer with Pokemon of one type that are stronger than what you faced so far. You could say he is like the area leader. Head for the building an enter. The trainers use Rock Pokemon, so Water, leaf, or fighting type come in handing. Meaning use Squirtle or Bulbasaur or Butterfree will be needed. The leader is in the back of the room, talk to him to engage battle.
Name: Brock Pokemon: Geodude L. 12, Onix L. 14 Prize: Boulderbadge, TM34, $1386 Easiest way to win again Brock to use an assault of elemental moves
that are strong against his Pokemon. Water Gun and Vine Whip will look
great. Ember doesn't do well, but it doesn't do bad, but he'll heal his
Pokemon if they get burnt and that's a free turn for you. Confusion via Butterfree. Heal when needed and he'll go down.
