Pokemon: Tentacool
If you haven't obtained HM03 yet, go back to the Safari Zone and get it! You will need it.
Fly from your current location to Pallet Town, where the game all
started. You can visit your mom and she'll heal your Pokemon for you.
Prof. Oak will check your Pokedex progress. At the body of water, surf
south until you reach an island.
You'll notice that the gym door is locked if you try to enter. You'll
need to find the key in the Mansion (building at the top left of the
island). First however, check out the Lab (bottom left). Once inside
the lab, head all the way right and to the last room. The scientist
inside will revive fossils to have obtained. The other two rooms
contain people willing to do in-game trades. After you've gotten your
anceint Pokemon, return outside. Next door is the Center and Mart. Buy items and heal. Now its time for the mansion
Pokemon: Koffing, Weezing, Grimer, Muk, Ponyta, Growlithe/Vulpix
Head up and check the 5th block on the right for a Moon Stone. Go up
and then right (avoiding the stairs) nab the escape rope and then left.
"Talk" to the Pokemon Statue to press a switch. Now go back down to the
stairs to the second floor. Do the same thing to this statue. Go up and around the corner to the stairs. On the next floor you should see another statue to the lower right. Talk to it and proceed right in the newly opened passage. You'll see two ledges. Follow the bigger one. You'll fall into a blocked off area of floor 1. Walk around the scientist (or fight him) and down the tree lined path. Grab the item and take the stairs to the basement. Once down here, head up, left, and then down to the room. Grab TM14 and press the switch to open a new area. In this room, head left and out, up and then right as far as you can. You'll see the new passage opened. Head up (fight or skip the trainer) and then head left all the way until you hit another sealed off passage. Head up into the room and grab the rare candy. Backtrack to the room next to this one (with the beds) and activate the switch. Head left again and grab TM22 from the table. head down and grab the Secret Key. Use an escape rope to return to the surface.
Now that you have the key, heal at the center, and then head for the
gym. Inside you have two ways of getting through it. Battling, or
answer questions. Talk to the machines near the trainers to get
quizzed. If you get it right, you move on without having the fight. Get
it wrong and you'll end up fighting the trainer and then able to move
on.
If you go about by battling, most trainers will use fire types from 33-37 so water and ground types will do well here.
If you want to go about this the quiz way, the answers are: Yes, no, no, no, yes, no. Now its time for Blaine!
Blaine Pokemon: Growlithe L. 42, Ponyta L. 40, Rapidash L. 42, Arcanine L. 47 Prize: Volcanobadge, TM35, $4653
Blaine can be very difficult because he ranges 7 levels. Water, rock,
and ground type attacks will do moderate damage if your under level 40.
Bubblebeam/surf or Rock Slide is recommended.
With Blaine down, there is only more gym left to go before you are able
to take on the Elite 4. Remember Viridian's closed gym? Yep.
