Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire gave birth to a really fun multiplayer game and sidequest called "Pokemon Contests." You can be pitted against 4 levels of difficulty when you face the AI, or you can challenge 3 other friends. Upon winning, you'll get a cool ribbon for your Pokemon and neat surprize at the end. Half of this page is a FAQ, then next half is tips for the contests which I assume you know how to make berries and operate a berry blender. So, on with this guide.
What is a Pokemon Contest?: A Pokemon contest is an appeal contest where your Pokemon use their known attacks to excite the judge and the audience. Attacks your Pokemon know become "Contest Moves" and have different effects and attributes than what they would have during a battle. The move's animation is still the same. Where do I go to participate in a contest?: In Verdanturf, Fallabor, Slateport, and Lilycove are home to a cube-shaped red building. Verdantuf is home to the Normal Contests; Fallabar, Super; Slateport, Hyper; and Lilycove, Master. Inside these buildings, you can enter your Pokemon into one of five contests: Cute, Tough, Cool, Beauty, and Smart; given that your Pokemon is able to participate. In order for a Pokemon to participate in a contest, you must have a Contest Pass which is obtained in Verdanturf's Contest Center. Secondly, you must have gotten the ribbon from the lower ranked contests. (If you want to participate in Super, you must have gotten the Normal Ribbon; To partcipate in Master, you must have all the other ribbons, etc) How does a Pokemon Contest work?: Pokemon contests are really simple to understand. When you enter one of the contests, you will present your to a crowd of people along with 3 other trainer's Pokemon. Whatever Pokemon is most liked by the crowd will go first. Least favorite will go last. Then, your Pokemon will use their moves to please the judge in 5 Appeal turns. Your Pokemon must use a move and depending on the effects of the move, you'll gain Appeal Points which are represented by hearts. When a move pleases the crowd, a little meter rises on the left of the screen and you'll gain an appeal point. When this meter is filled, the crowd goes wild and the Pokemon to make it full gets extra hearts. Different moves have different effects on the crowd, your Pokemon, and other Pokemon. At the end of 5 turns, the crowd points and appeal points are added together and the Pokemon with the highest points wins. =========================================== So now that the contests are explained, what should you do to win? If you follow the advice given, you're bound to win. This is what I did to win for several of my contest Pokemon. First Step: The first step to winning is giving your Pokemon PokeBlocks, which are created at the various contest halls with an old man. Pokeblocks have different feels, levels, and tastes. The better the level, the more a select contest stat will increase when you feed it to your Pokemon. At the menu displaying your Pokeblocks is a smaller sidebar with a certain color on it. The colors represent what stats will increase. Select the Pokeblock case to give your Pokeblock to a Pokemon. Any berry numbered 36 or above is recommended for blending. These have higher levels and feels and increase a certain stat greatly. Your Pokemon can be fed only 12 Pokeblocks and then it will refuse to eat anymore, so be careful when picking Pokemon for a certain contest. When you have nearly maxed out a certain stat, fly to Slateport and enter the Pokemon Fan Club building. Place the Pokemon with the maxed stat in your first slot and speak with the chairman. He'll give you a colored scarf to put on your Pokemon, which boosts the points you get obtained by the crowd. Second Step: The second step is to teach your Pokemon moves to use in the contest. These moves will determine how well you will do in a contest. Your Pokemon should only know moves that are labeled at "Cute", "Tough", etc based on what contest they will be used for. They should not know more than one move with the same effect. Contest moves have various effects. Usually they will startle Pokemon, prevent you from being startled, give more points based on rank, etc. I recommend having one each of the following types if possible:
- One that prevents you from being startled THird step: Third step is using the moves. Using moves based on what position you are in can deduct points from others, prevent points from being deducted from you, or award you more points. Using these moves in the way I have mentioned will usually end up with you winning in the end. If your in first place, you should use a move that prevents you from being startled. You won't have any points deducted if an opponent uses a startling move. If appropriate, use a move that will award you more points if your in first (ex: Aerial Ace). If you have a move like Aerial Ace and a move taught to your Pokemon that prevents you from being startled, alternate them if you remain in 1st place during two appearl turns. Using a move twice in a row will deduct points. Some moves make Pokemon after you nervous. If a Pokemon becomes nervous, they will not appeal that turn. Usually you should use these moves when your in first if you don't have an Aerial Ace or startle prevention move. Other moves startle Pokemon before you. These moves should be done if your in fourth place. It'll usually deduct points from your opponents and might put you in a higher position during the next turn. Some moves award more points if your in last place, like Growl. These moves should also be used in 4th place. Highly appealing moves should usually be used if your in 3rd or 4th place, or if you think it will get the crowd going when it comes your turn to use it. These moves will deduct alot of points if your Pokemon is startled. Some moves will prevent your Pokemon from appealing the next turn if you use it, but they give alot of points when you use them. Hyper Beam, Selfdestruct, Teeter Dance, and Explosion are a few. These should only be used on the 5th appeal turn, or if odds play in your favor to get the crowd going. |
