As with all Pokemon games, going around the select region and defeating the 8 Gym Leaders is only half of the quest. Before going after them, its usually best to have a couple of restorative items like Potion and Full Heal. Also, Pokemon that might have an advantage over them is another good thing to have. Most Gym Leaders will take a couple tries to beat, but all of them can be defeated.

:: Rustboro Gym Leader Roxanne ::

Located in Rustboro City, the leader Roxanne specializes in Rock Pokemon, much like Brock. At this early stage in the game, Leaf and Water type moves will work on her if you have Wingull/Mudkip or Treecko/Shroomish.

:: Dewford Gym Leader Brawly ::

Good chance you don't have any Psychic Pokemon at this point in the game (unless you have a Kadabra/Ralts that knows Confusion). So, you'll have to use Flying moves if you want an advantage over him. Taillow is recommended.

:: Mauville Gym Leader Watson ::

At this point you won't have any Ground type moves, unless you have a Mudkip that knows Mudslap. Fire moves, however, can do good on Magnemite and Magneton if you have them. If you don't, throw a good leveled Geodude out there and go crazy. As for Voltorb, anything will do.

:: Lavaridge Gym Leader Flannery ::
>

One word about this fight: easy. All of her Pokemon can be quickly wiped out with Water moves, so that is the best route to take.

:: Petalburg Gym Leader Norman ::

Hardest fight up to this point. Slaking has a high defense and HP, so if you don't have any Pokemon that knows some good Fighting moves, your best bet is to attack with your strongest moves. Alot of healing will be needed.

:: Fortree Gym Leader Winona ::

Simple Electric type attacks will do well here. However, getting to attack first may be a problem. Rock type moves are also effective and because most Rock Pokemon have a high defense, they will do the best here, except against Peliper.

:: Mossdeep Gym Leaders Liz and Tate ::

Both Lunatone and Solrock are of the Psychic/Rock variety, so a mix of Dark, Water, and Leaf moves will easily take them down.

:: Sootopolis Gym Leader Wallace ::

All water types, sounds easy, right? Wrong. Whiscash will give you the most trouble since it is also Ground. All his Pokemon are fast, and more likely to attack first and defeat you before you know it. If you have some powerful Electric/Leaf Moves, use them and go crazy.
