![]() Another concept introduced in Pokemon Gold and Silver is breeding. This can be beneficial to completing your Pokedex or making a trained fighter. Either way, it is a long process that is well worth it. Starting off, any Pokemon that is not a legendary or baby-stage Pokemon can breed, with Manaphy and Phione being the only exceptions. In each generation or region, there is a specific place where breeding can occur. These are daycare centers found on Route 34 (GSC), Route 117 (RSE), Four Island (FrLg), or Solaceon Town (DPP). To get your Pokemon to breed, you must leave two compatible Pokemon in the daycare. Pokemon are compatible if they are opposite genders and come from the same species, the same egg group, or of the same evolution family. Pokemon are also compatible if they are placed in the daycare with a Ditto. Now just because you have two compatible Pokemon that doesn't mean they'll breed. They actually have to like each other. This is determined by talking to the old man outside the daycare. If he says "They get along well" or something similar, the two Pokemon are compatible and will produce an egg. If he says "They don't get along much" or something similar, the two Pokemon might produce an egg. If he says "they prefer to play with other Pokemon than each other" they will not produce an egg at all. If your Pokemon are compatible and will produce an egg, walk around a bit. When an egg has been produced, the old man will stand inside the pen (GSC), outside the fence (RSEFrLg), or will face the road (DPP). If you say yes to his question, you will receive the egg your Pokemon produced. If you stay in the area, you won't see the change, so enter a building or another route then return to see if he's moved.
![]() Now that you've gotten an egg, it's time to hatch it. Pokemon eggs are defined as easy to hatch, moderate, or hard to hatch. This is due to the amount of time it takes to hatch the egg, which is actually the amount of steps one must take. Most easy to hatch eggs take less than 5,000 steps. Hard to hatch eggs take anywhere from 10,000 or more steps. Moderate eggs take any amount of steps inbetween the aforementioned two. In Ruby and Sapphire, players had access to the mach bike which speeds up their movement, thus reducing the time it takes to hatch an egg. In Emerald (and later Diamond and Pearl), players had access to a new effect to the "Flame Body" Pokemon ability. If a Pokemon with this ability is placed in the party, the number of steps needed to hatch an egg is reduced by half. Couple that with the mach bike and Pokemon eggs hatch in no time. In FireRed and leafGreen, players have a hard time catching Pokemon as neither are present. When an egg finally attaches, it will be the lowest stage of the female Pokemon (or the non-Ditto parent if bred with a Ditto) at level 5 (Gen2&3) or level 1 (Gen4). Moves of the father Pokemon will be passed down if the lower stage Pokemon is able to learn it, via level or TM/HM. If chain breeding to produce usually unobtainable moves, the Pokemon will learn it. For example, a Charizard that knows Flamethrower will pass it down to the Charmander, and a female Salamence bred with a male Gyarados that knows Hydro Pump will yeild a Bagon that knows Hydro Pump, or a female Tyranitar bred with a male Charizard that knows Outrage will yeild a Larvitar that knows Outrage.
![]() Besides moves, a Pokemon will inherit the IVs of the parents and a small chance at getting the nature of the parent Pokemon. Besides passing down IVs, moves, and natures, there is another reason to breed Pokemon and that is to obtain more Pokemon. When you breed, you will obtain either a new Pokemon or a Pokemon you had once before. Say you trade over your newly purified Croconow from Pokemon collosseum. The only way to get Totodile is to breed. Breed it again to get another Totodile and trade for your friend's newly hatched Chikorita. Below is a table of Pokemon that can only be obtained via breeding, and what is needed to breed them, and what generation you can start getting them in.
