Grass-type Pokemon are rather uncommon in the games.

Grass Pokemon primary serve as healers in battle, so as such, makes them more defensive Pokemon. The objective is to drain HP from the opponent and restore HP. Many Grass Pokemon are able to learn Leech Seed, Synthesis, Giga Drain and Poison Powder making them very effective at this role. They have the defenses to hold up in battle to be able to perform this role.

Offensively, very few Grass Pokemon will be viable. Most Grass moves do massive damage, but have low PP and some sort of side effect (recoil damage, reduced power, etc). Of the moves they don't have any repercussions, there many that lack in sizable power. Grass Pokemon usually have good attacking power but the moves lack in power themselves without having terrible consequences. Grass moves are very effective to Rock, Water and Ground Pokemon and extremely effective against Pokemon who have dual types of the aforementioned three.
