Quite possibly the only viral infection you ever want anyone to get is the Pokerus (a portmantaeu of Pokemon and virus). Well, it's not really a virus as the Pokemon nurses call them "small life forms." Regardless of what it is, it is very helpful in raising your Pokemon. This little bug first appeared in Gold and Silver and has been in every game since.

Once a Pokemon gets the Pokerus, it will read "Status: Pokerus" on the status menu. This means that the Pokemon is infected. If it is in your party, the infection will spread when you battle, walk around, or heal at a center. If the Pokemon with the infection is in the PC, the infection will not spread and will last longer.

So what is so special about the virus? When a Pokemon is infected, it will gain double the effort value points than it normally would. This means that the Pokemon's stat growth with double. Attach a macho brace to that Pokemon and its stat growth will quadrupel.

In about two to four days, the virus will eventually be fought off by the Pokemon and they will no longer be infected, nor will they be able to be infected again. At this point, a small dot will appear next to the Pokemon's level in the status menu, or a smily face in Diamond and Pearl.

Even though the Pokemon is no longer infected, it will still have the increased stat growth bonus.

Now that is out of the way, let's talk about how one gets their Pokemon infected. After a Pokemon battles, it has a 1 in 21,000 chance of getting infected. Talk about rare, that's almost three times rarer than a shiny Pokemon. You won't notice it right away (unless that's what you're looking for) and will be told you have it at your next Pokemon center visit.

The other way to get it is through the Pokemon of a friend. If your friend has the Pokerus, ask him to give you a Pokemon that has the infection so you may get it.
