Water-type is one of the original fifteen types, and is one of the most common if not the most common type out there.

Offensively, the Water-type is excellent. Most Water-type Pokemon have high attack or special attack, and can learn a vareity of powerful moves such as Aqua Tail, Waterfall, Hydro Pump and Surf. Since most fully evolved Water Pokemon have a second type, this allows them to use enough more powerful moves and receive a stab bonus. All of them (with the obvious exception of Magikarp) can learn Ice Beam or Blizzard and helps take out the Pokemon they're weak to.

Defensively, Water Pokemon are great in the defense or special defense stat, but usually not both unless it suffers attack-wise. They also usually have huge amounts of HP that allow them to last long in battle. Since most Water-types are dual typed, they may gain a resistance to Electric or Grass, but may gain another weakness. They may not even lose a weakness at all but rather gain a few more (think Poliwrath and Sharpedo!).

Popular water types include Blastoise, Palkia, Suicune, and Wailord.
