As in Red and Blue, you will be asked to nam your character and your rival. Afterwards, you'll find yourself in your room. Before you leave, make sure you snag the potion from your PC. Go outside, towards your Rival's house, then up into the grass. Professor Oak will find you only to be ambushed by a Pikachu, which he will catch. He then takes you to his lab where your Rival is waiting. Go take the Pokeball on the desk when told to do so, but... your rival snatches it away! Instead, he'll give you Pikachu. Try to leave and your rival will want to battle...
Rival Pokemon: Lv. 5 Eevee Prize: 150 It doesn't matter whether you win or lose this battle. Just Thundershock his Eevee until it falls. Be sure to use that Potion when your HP gets low. Your rival will leave, and then Pikachu will pop out of its ball. You can monitor its happiness by talking to it. Leave here, then continue on into Route 1.
Pokemon: Pidgey, Rattata Can't capture either Pokemon now as you've got no Pokeballs. Just battle them to gain EXP and a level or two. Talk to the man in this route to receive a free potion. Continue into Viridian City.
If you're low on HP or PP, stop in at the Pokemon Center (building labeled "Poke") and heal. Not much you can do at this point except go next door to the Pokemart (the building labeled "mart") where you'll be given a parcel item to give to Professor Oak. Return to Pallet via
Go to Professor Oak's and give him the parcel item, which turns out to be a mysterious custom Pokeball. Afterwardsm Oak gives you and your rival a Pokedex. Go to your Rival's house to receive the Town Map item. Go north into Route 1, then to Viridian City
First thing you should do is go to the Pokemart and buy at least 5 Pokeballs, and a few potions. If you have any money left, buy at least two Antidotes; you may need them. Go west and you'll hit Route 22.
Pokemon: Rattata, Spearow, Nidoran M, Nidoran F, Mankey You have four options at this point in the game: 1, capture Mankey. 2, capture Nidoran male. 3, Capture Nidoran female. 4, capture and evolve Caterpie. Any option is fine as long as you raise the Pokemon to a high enough level to where it will learn Double Kick, or Confusion. If you want Caterpie, skip this section and go to Route 2. Now that you've captured Mankey/Nidoran, raise it to at level 11 for Nidoran and level 9 for Mankey. If you continue west into Route 22, you'll find your rival. You don't have to fight him as it is entirely optional. Whether you skip him or fight him, plus whether you lost or won your first battle, will determine what he evolves is Eevee into.
Rival Pokemon: Lv. 9 Spearow, Lv. 8 Eevee Prize: 300 Pikachu should be used against Spearow due to knowing Thundershock. Mankey/Nidoran should be used against Eevee if double-kick is known. This battle isn't that hard, just keep your HP up. Go back to Viridian City as there is nothing left to do here.
Heal at the center and stock up on more items, if possible. If you head north, you'll be stopped by an old man who will show you how to catch a Pokemon. A little bit after him is a small tree where a hidden potion item is. Nothing more to do here, so keep going north.
Pokemon: Pidgey, Rattata, Nidoran M, Nidoran F Engage in a few battles, gain some EXP. This route is split into two by Viridian Forest. You don't have cut yet, so you're gonna have to go through it.
Pokemon: Caterpie, Metapod, Pidgey, Pidgeotto Near the tree by the entrance is an antidote. It's hidden, so look for it. To left is a new trainer who has Nidoran. North of her is a Pokeball item. Return to the big tree near the start and head right, then up. You'll battle two trainers (you should), then the forst becomes a straight forward path, you'll fight two more trainers while fidning another antidote and potion item. Just after the trainer with the level 10 Caterpie is the exit. Be sure to find the Pidgetto before you leave. Once you leave the forest, continue into Pewter City.
Head for the Pokemon center and heal your Pokemon. The Pokemart is on the other side of town. Find it and buy plenty of potions. Behind the Pokemon center is the Pokemon Gym, where Brock awaits.
This gym is rather simple. You can avoid the gym trainer, or battle him. I suggest battling him for extra EXP. Talk to Brock, the man the back, to engage battle.
Brock Pokemon: lv. 10 Geodude, Lv. 12 Onix. If you have Mankey or ether Nidoran at an appropriate level to where they learn Low Kick/Double Kick, they can take out both Pokemon with relative ease. Butterfree learns Confusion as soon as it evolves from Metapod, and it too can help get the job done. Geodude poses no threat. Onix, however, will if it uses the move "Bide." Once it does, it will store energy then unlease it 2-3 turns later. The double it deals depends wholly on the damage to inflict on it during those two turns. Stop attacking and lower its defense/attack with Growl/Tail Whip/Leer. Once it unleashes energy, kill it. :) Once defeated, Brock will had over the Boulder Badge, the first official Pokemon league badge. He also gives you TM31, a technique machine, that teaches the move Bide to one Pokemon. He also gives a fair amount of cash. Stock up on some potions and Pokeballs, because it is time to go on.
